Since Illustration Friday is an English website, I'll write this post in English.
This week's topic was 'launch'. There was also a quote from Henry David Thoreau: "You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment." That quote inspired me to make this illustration.

For a while now, there is a picture of a black man in my studio. I don't know why - is it because of his beautifull legs? - but the man intrigues me. The picture lays there all the time, sometimes on my desk, sometimes on the floor. And all the time he is staring at me. So I thought it was time to draw him. On the photo he was wearing shorts, but I gave him also a poncho to wear on top of the shorts. I thought he really needed that. After drawing the poncho, I was not sure anymore if he looked like a man or a woman, which I liked. And instead of his new classy office shoes, I drew nice warm, comfortable and fluffy socks for him. He also got balloons and two fishy friends.
What about the raincoat?
After a while I was quite happy with the result and I showed the final piece to my partner Jeroen. But he said: "I don't understand anything of that illustration. Why does that woman wear a raincoat?" So now I am really curious what you think of this picture. What does it mean to you? Why do you think he (or she?) is wearing a poncho? Please feel free to leave a comment below!
Update June 23th
When I came into my studio this morning, I looked at the illustration again. And then I thought: there is something wrong with it. I didn't like the waves anymore. So I decided to erase the pencil line on top of the waves and I removed the two bigger waves. One of the fish came to help the man, so that he didn't have to fly away already and could stay a little longer with us. Another fish appeared on the paper to play with his friends. And than I thought it was ok. When I opened my blog, I saw the comment (below) of Roland Sohier. It was just wat he said: the symmetry of the two waves was what annoyed me. Here is the final work (I think - I often change things after a couple of days and that's why I don't publish my work right after making a piece, but because of Illustration Friday I have to do that now).

I like it! The raincoat is protection from the water, rain, or a metaphor for being a little hesitant about the launch. I can relate;)

Well I assumed that the poncho with baloons was a device to assist with launching one's self into the sky!

I don't know why he's wearing a poncho - I just know i like it! Does there have to be a reason?

laat je niet gek maken! Fijne tekening!

Lopen over water? (6x6)...tja, een zwarte man??? Een neger? Omgekeerd: regen... Poncho (6) weg? Groeten !!
